The orchestra welcomes new members of any age who are available to rehearse on Wednesday mornings in Kingston. We give three concerts a year and perform a varied repertoire. There are no auditions but you should have a good standard (at least Grade 5) and be a reasonably confident sight-reader.
We have a professional conductor and leader, and some of our players are retired professionals. However the majority are amateurs who have reached at least Grade 5 level. Our repertoire is mainly works written before about 1850, as this suits our resources and musical preferences, but we also play more recent music and we regularly commission new pieces from young composers.
We are actively recruiting viola players, to maintain the balance of the orchestra. We have a full wind section, and percussion and access to other instruments as the repertoire demands. We are 47 strong at the moment and follow the academic year with about 10 rehearsals each term.
Please email the secretary at if you are interested in joining us (to try to stop spammers the link will not work – you need to type it in). Rehearsals are on Wednesday mornings (10.15 to 12.30 with a coffee break), at Kingston United Reformed Church, Eden Street, Kingston upon Thames, KT1 1HZ, easily accessible by train or bus, with car parks nearby.
